Mountain and Sea Guides is based in Applecross running all year round adventure activity. Our summer season is split between a variety of sea kayaking trips, all aimed at beginner level, and summer hill walking and mountaineering. In the winter our attention turns firmly towards winter mountaineering allowing a year of seasonally adventurous activities from half day trips to full multi day expeditions.

Our groups are made up of outdoor enthusiasts from all over the UK and Europe experiencing the best that Scottish mountain and sea based activity has to offer. We’re fortunate to be based in the most varied part of the Highlands benefiting from the gulf stream and a geological history which has created skylines and seascapes which make Applecross and Wester Ross an outdoor adventurers playground.

Our instructors are qualified within the different disciplines demanded by each type of activity. As such we are governed by the safe practices of the national bodies the British Canoe Union and the UKMTA, AMI. Our staff have up to the minute wilderness first aid training and certification and Mountain & Sea Guides has been awarded the Investor in People Award for the second time on 10th January 2003, for our commitment to training, working practices and standards.

  • A kayaking environment in the most sheltered part of the Highlands & Islands ~ we are able to paddle on more weather days than any other location in Scotland.
  • The enclosed nature of the Inner Sound offers protection from Atlantic swells &  has tremendous variety of islands & wildlife.
  • And finally . . . the mountains . . . young volcanic Alpine peaks of Skye to our west and ancient Torridon sandstone mountains surrounding Applecross.
  • No where in Scotland has greater diversity & skylines as spectacular as the Cuillin Ridge or the Torridon Giants.

Whatever adventure package you choose you can be assured of a safe and rewarding experience with guides who live & work full time in the NW Highlands.

- Winter Mountaineering Trip

“ What a week! We are all absolutely shattered but exhilarated! I never knew my body had such adrenalin. Kayaking, rock climbing, lunching with the seals – what better way to spend you holiday. Fabulous instruction from Mike, great group, lovely food & accommodation. Thanks for a great holiday – will definitely be back & will recommend this to all my chums”
Sarah Clark ~ Inner Sound Kayak Expedition

“A spectacular trip through an inhospitable, Arctic landscape. We encountered a full range of mountain weather from blizzard conditions and total whiteout to brilliant sunshine and fantastic views. I didn't expect to be coming back from the hills with a suntan! The hospitality and friendliness shown to me by everyone has made this trip truly memorable”
Dave King ~ Cairngorm Plateau Expedition

One group left us this diary summary of the Inner Sound Kayak Expedition . . .

“Blazing Paddles – 29 July – 2nd August 2002”

Highlights: Puffins, Minky Whales, Porpoise, Arctic Terns, Seals, Kittiwakes, an otter, & Wild Chanterelle mushrooms at camp.

Sunday - Day 1 ~ training & splashing about in the bay, Applecross
Monday ~ kayak trip to seal colony and coral beach, fantastic sunshine and wildlife.
Tuesday ~ Set off on long distance trip across open water to the Isle of Raasay. Saw two whales! ( or was it the same whale twice!) Camped at Brochel Castle.
Wednesday ~ Spent day sleeping, collecting mushrooms and paddled on down the Raasay shoreline one the wind had dropped. Spent the night on the south end of Raasay at a fireside camp. Ate the Chanterelle mushrooms with our meal – yum!
Thursday ~ Out peering at the sea from about 4am waiting for the right conditions. Wind dropped by 12 noon! …and the blazing paddles set off over the Inner Sound to the Crowlin Islands. Lighthouse in sight and the 8km crossing made in just over an hour with a fair breeze pushing us. Not bad. Applecross here we come!

Thanks to Dave, Matt, Alison, Steve & Amanda
